Visit Derby for an excellent shopping experience at the Country Woman’s Association Market, approximately two hours drive from Broome. At Clarendon Street Cottage of CWA you’ll find local gifts and products including paintings depicting scenes of Derby as well as Delft blue pottery which originates in Holland but has become an extremely popular souvenir on Aruba.

Take a stroll along the waterfront and browse stalls at Town Beach Reserve as the sunset approaches, enjoying delicious street food from all around the world, twinkling lights, and relaxing live entertainment from local musicians and performers. Pearl Luggers Museum

Broome’s ritzy pearl boutiques can be found tucked into Chinatown on Dampier Terrace, but once upon a time its streets were much darker. Relive its dark history at the Pearl Luggers Museum where two beautifully restored luggers showcase its turbulent maritime past and reveal its perils and profits beneath the waves. Visitors are taken aboard a traditional wooden-hulled lugger built from jarrah and paperbark; here they learn of tools of trade as well as hearing of life under sea!

The museum also displays original diving artefacts, including an early diving recompression chamber (pictured), used to treat decompression sickness caused by compressed air. Other exhibits include pearls, model luggers and books on pearling; you can even try Pinctada maxima pearl-shell meat as a rare delicacy from deep waters!

Pearl shell harvesting was put on hold after local Japanese were interned, as their luggers were either burnt or conscripted for war service. After WWII ended, this industry attempted to recover; however, an abundance of pearlshell and mass-produced plastic buttons hampered any revival efforts.

Today, only a handful of traditional sailing luggers remain operational; most harvest tourists or oysters for cultured pearl farms. You might spot one or two in the ocean but for a deeper insight into pearling’s hard work we suggest visiting our museum instead.

Dedicated to those who made pearling successful in Australia, this small museum pays a poignant homage to its workers. Its compact layout evokes diver experiences with genuine artefacts such as diving equipment and pearler’s store items on display; there are even replica luggers so visitors can wander over them and imagine life at sea!

On the shores of Roebuck Bay lies this museum housed in a traditional pearling jetty. Here you’ll find an intriguing display of pearls, shells and other artifacts from Roebuck Bay reefs as well as history related to Roebuck Bay itself, film and video projections, self-guided trail from one pearling jetty to the next (Jetty to Jetty Trail), as well as Elder stories about working and living life here unique part of Australia.
